Jose Calugas Apartments

Seattle Housing Authority (SHA)

This 36-unit apartment building, part of the award-winning High Point redevelopment (over $500M development), was designed as market-rate housing, but is now home to low-income residents, and several of the units are designed for disabled residents.

The apartments were designed to the high standards of the community. During the programming phase, residents discussed their concerns about moving into the building from small-scale duplexes and four-plexes. In response to their concerns, the building was designed to fit the scale and character of single-family homes, with ground floor access to each unit, including front porches and yards.

José Calugas Apartments were a huge success. This particular housing style was selected by more residents than could be accommodated. The design team was able to satisfy the needs of the community yet remain loyal to the building program, project budget and the schedule.
