Rainier Beach High School

seattle public schools

RAI developed a Master Plan to prioritize short-term modernizations. The school’s immediate priorities included upgrades to the library, science, and culinary arts programs as well as overall building upgrades. The library was relocated to the second floor and expanded to 8,000 sf. To recoup the classroom space lost in the expansion of the library, the first floor computer lab and career center were each broken into two classrooms. The existing library book stack room became a fifth new classroom. Science classrooms were upgraded with peninsula-style lab areas to accommodate 32 students for the school’s life science and biology focus.

The new performing arts stage and adjacent outdoor deck enable small arts performances to be held in the library. The corridors throughout the school have new flooring, lighting and ceiling tiles for a brighter, more modern feel. Restrooms were renovated with improved ventilation, partitions, and ADA upgrades.

Low-e windows were installed on the east side of the building with new window shades throughout. New and efficient mechanical and electrical systems reduce energy consumption.
