Biology Research Greenhouse

western washington university

Rolluda Architects provided planning and design services for the addition of a 900 sf greenhouse, 400 sf headhouse, and the renovation of an existing greenhouse. All three buildings are used for teaching and research by the Biology Department.

As part of the pre-design process, RAI led meetings with University project managers and maintenance staff, Biology Department faculty, and students. The meetings enabled us to clarify the requirements and priorities for the facilities.

Based on the information we received from the pre-design process, we designed a new greenhouse with two separate climate zones, air movement, misting and irrigation systems, grow lights and plant racks. All doors, louvers and vents are screened with 30mm mesh to prevent the intrusion of pests and pollen. An existing greenhouse was renovated with improved lighting and irrigation, improved screening at doors and windows, and replacement of existing polycarbonate panels with double-paned glass.
